Title: The Reception of Shakespeare and Milton in China

Abstract:

William Shakespeare and John Milton, the giants of the English Renaissance, have exerted significant influence on many aspects in the modern world. Since their introduction to China nearly two centuries ago, the Chinese Shakespeare and Milton have been closely linked with their global counterparts. This lecture focuses on the history of the reception of Shakespeare and Milton in China, including translation studies and cross-cultural research.

About the Speaker:

Hao Tianhu, a BA and MA winner from Peking University and a PhD from Columbia University, is currently a Qiushi Distinguished Professor (Tier 2) and doctoral supervisor at Zhejiang University, serving also as vice Dean of the Faculty of Humanities. He has been invited for academic visits to the UK, USA, Italy, Greece, and other countries. He is the principal expert of the National Social Science Fund of China (NSSFC) Major Program “Compilation, Translation, and Research of Milton’s Works”. His research interests include early modern English literature, comparative literature, and English manuscript studies. He has published four monographs in Chinese and English, and has twice been awarded the Second Prize for Outstanding Scientific Research Achievements in Higher Education Institutions by the Ministry of Education. His English monograph Commonplace Reading and Writing in Early Modern England and Beyond was published by Routledge (2024). He has published approximately 70 academic papers in Chinese and English in prominent journals in China, the UK, the USA, Russia, and elsewhere. He is also the co-translator of seven translated works and the editor of the book series “Zhonghua Translation InstituteMedieval and Renaissance Translation Series” and “Books on Renaissance”. His academic affiliations include member of the Executive Committee of the Milton Society of America (2021-23), editor-in-chief of the journal Medieval and Renaissance Studies, and editorial board member for internationally recognized journals such as Milton Quarterly and Multicultural Shakespeare.
