English Department


The origin of English Department traces back to English Department of School of Literatures, which was established in 1946 as one of the five major schools of National Lanzhou University. In 1947 it was renamed Department of English Language and Literature with Professor Shui Tiantong as the dean, who was a renowned scholar in Shakespearean studies.

 

Professor He Tianxiang served as dean of English Department from 1963 to 1971 and from 1979 to 1982. Professor Zhang Zhixiang took the position of dean in 1983. He was devoted to British literature, literary theories and Shakespearean studies, among other things. Professor Feng Jianwen was dean from 1994 and 1998. He is the initiator of the translation theory of likeness in spirit.

 

English Department has a faculty of 28 full-time teachers, including 4 professors and 3 associate professors. It recruits international teachers who have an excellent command of English skills and rich teaching experience. English Department enrolls approximately 80 students every year. Besides, opportunities are provided to international students to visit Lanzhou University as exchange students.
