On May 18, Zhou Mi, an associate professor of translation and a simultaneous interpreter, was invited by the School of Foreign Languages and Literatures to deliver a lecture entitled “Translators and Interpreters’ Future in the AI Age”, which was convened by associate Prof. He Min, vice director of Translation Institute.

After sharing her journey from an English major to a professional translator, Zhou Mi, based on her 20-year career, made a profound analysis about both challenges and opportunities encountering translators and interpreters in the AI age. As she proposed, despite increasing arguments over whether translation as an industry is coming to its end with the ever-developing technologies, the fact has it that machine translation has gone too short to break through its limits to replace human force. She suggested that human and machine are not playing zero-sum game. Instead, translators should learn to utilize machine to produce refined translations. She encouraged students to make a clear career plan and to obtain relevant accredited certificates.
