On March 28, the campus selection for the 28th “FLTRP·ETIC Cup” National English Debating Competition was successfully held at Tianshan Building, Yuzhong Campus. The event was organized by the School of Foreign Languages and Literatures, with the aim of selecting outstanding students to compete in the West China regional finals, while enhancing students’ English critical thinking and language proficiency.

The competition brought together 32 debaters from 11 schools: the School of Foreign Languages and Literatures, Cuiying Honors School, the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences, the School of Atmospheric Sciences, the School of Civil Engineering and Mechanics, the School of Economics, the School of Management, the School of Information Science and Engineering, the School of Life Sciences, the School of Public Health, and the First School of Clinical Medicine. The debaters engaged in intense English debates. The competition strictly followed the official format, consisting of preliminary rounds and a final. Teams advanced to the final based on their rankings after the preliminaries. During the final round, all debaters demonstrated clear logic and fluent expression, showcasing their English proficiency and critical thinking skills. Six faculty members from the College English Teaching Center of the SFLL served as judges for the qualifying round competition: Cai Yong, Gu Xiu, Ma Qifeng, Ma Jingjing, Xu Yang, and Yin Lei.
After intense competition, Li Jiayan and Wang Ruiying, as well as Tian Zenghui and Sun Yiyang, won first prize. Zhu Yuqi and Jin Zican, together with Lu Yiming and Zeng Zijia, won second prize. The remaining teams were awarded third prize. Li Jiayan and Sun Yiyang were named “Best Debater”. The first-prize teams will represent Lanzhou University in the West China regional finals.

This competition not only served as a platform for our students to practice their English and demonstrate their abilities, but also contributed to the cultivation of versatile foreign language talents and the strengthening of students’ core English competencies. The College English Teaching Center made preparations and provided full support throughout the event. It will continue to assist the winning teams in their preparation for the regional finals.
